Upon arrival, we'll register and receive a briefing from the National Park Rangers, setting the stage for our adventure. Commencing the hike at approximately 9:00 AM, we'll traverse diverse vegetation zones, including grassland, montane, heather, and a bamboo forest. The trail offers breathtaking views of the Portal Peaks, Mount Baker, Wiseman, and, on clear days, a glimpse of Mount Stanley. Along the way, encounter the beauty of rivers, waterfalls, and the possibility of spotting various primate species, such as blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus, and the elusive Chimpanzees (not habituated), along with an array of unique bird species.
The hike, rated as moderate with no technical skills required, takes you to elevations ranging from 2561 to 3000m above sea level, culminating at the stunning Glacial Lake Mahoma. After soaking in the panoramic views and capturing memorable moments, our descent retraces the same route. Post-descent, we'll drive back to Fort Portal, with an anticipated return to your hotel between 7:00 and 8:00 PM, making the approximate trip length around 12 hours.
What to bring: Ensure you're well-prepared with hiking boots, a rain jacket, a packed breakfast, and a backpack for a comfortable and enjoyable excursion. While we recommend the Central Circuit trail to Lake Mahoma, we also offer an alternative day hike on the Karangura trail, providing you with even more options to explore the natural wonders of Rwenzori Mountain National Park.
